The international committee for the Red Cross is an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war and armed violence.

The International Red Cross, state their mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found, to protect life and health and ensure respect for the human being, in particular in times of armed conflict and other emergencies, to work for the prevention of disease and for the promotion of health and social welfare, to encourage voluntary service and a constant readiness to give help by the members of the Movement, and a universal sense of solidarity towards all those in need of its protection and assistance. The fundamental principles of the Red Cross are Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, Universality.

The International Red Cross society was founded in 1863 due to the vision of Henry Dunant who wished to help ameliorate the treatment of the wounded soldiers during battle. Since its humble beginnings it has grown into a vital international organisation and has played a major role in all major conflicts.

The International Red Cross has been awarded the Nobel Peace prize a record 3 times.
