Nelson Mandela was one of the founders of the African National Congress in 1944. He spent 27 years in prison for his beliefs, until his release in 1990. In 1994, he became the first democratically elected president of South Africa. He has now retired from the Presidency but campaigns on issues such as HIV and education.
