Girish Chandra Ghosh

There is no sin which I have not committed,
but still there is no end of Grace
I have received from the Master.

Girish Chandra Ghosh

Girish Chandra Ghosh was one of Bengal’s greatest dramatistswho ran his own theatre company in Calcutta. Girish was also a noted poet, playwright, and actor. For many years Girish led a reckless, hedonistic and worldly life, a complete contrast to the life of a Saint.

He was a self-proclaimed libertine who did not believe in God. Even when he met Sri Ramakrishna for the first time he did not see anything in him. However slowly Sri Ramakrishna began to melt his heart and awaken the dormant spirituality that lay hidden within Girish. Eventually Girish Chandra Ghosh became one of Sri Ramakrishna’s most devoted disciples

It is testament to the spiritual vision of Sri Ramakrishna that he could see beyond Girish’s outer bad habits. As Sri Ramakrishna said to Girish.

I can see that a tremendous transformation is taking place in you. You see only your outer life, what you are doing outwardly, but inside you there is so much divinity and love for God.”

Through his unswerving faith and surrender to God, Girish Chandra Ghosh was able to makea remarkable transformation becoming a sincere and devoted seeker. Causing Swami Vivekanandato comment.

In G.C. [Girish] alone I have seen that true resignation-that true spirit of a servant of the Lord…I have not met his parallel. From him I have learnt the lesson of self-surrender

Thelast words of Girishwere:

Master, you have come. Please destroy my worldly intoxication. Victory to Sri Ramakrishna! Let us go.”
